I just want to say: AI is insane. I don’t mean that in a bad sense, I mean in a fully off-the-scale mindblowing sense.
I don’t think most people are even remotely close to appreciating how profound what’s happening right now as I write – and you read – this: There are now LLMs which are capable of taking commands from humans and creating an incredible range of tools and websites.
People think of sites like Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. as these megalithic things that are kind of etched in stone. You have to completely throw that thinking out!
You can literally wake up one morning, tell AI to create a site for you that is better than any site you have ever used before, and within minutes it will create it for you.
I’m not a complete expert on this but I’m not a neophyte either. I can say that it helps immensely to understand technology at various levels of serving web sites, from backend services to frontend technologies. The more you know, there more you can guide AI to effectively create things.
My recommendation would be to start with creating small tools. Think of some data that’s useful to you. Now think of ways you can obtain, transmit, and access that data. Keep it simple and basic, and go from there.
A meaningful system will have different components. For example many or most websites have microservices in their backend. It’s good to be familiar with microservices, the tools used to create them, how they work, etc.
Then there is the client which access the microservice and presents data to the user. Again, the more you know about different clients and the technologies used to provide and interact with data through them – be they web browsers or mobile operating systems – the better.
Having worked in IT for many years, what’s happening right now with AI is just insane. The power it gives developers is immense.
As I work with it day-by-day, week-by-week I’m still on a learning path that’s accelerating and continuing to completely blow me away.
The benefits aren’t just in actual coding and app creating, there’s an enormous potential to learn with AI. It’s like having access to a super-intelligent being with an incomprehensibly vast store of knowledge at its fingertips that can instantly answer your questions and guide you, based on its extensive knowledge.
I’m accumulating so much much information now that it’s difficult to keep up with it. I have a backlog of AI chat sessions filled with information that I need to document.
Sometimes I’m down in the weeds with AI, working on getting a tool to work exactly the way I want. But sometimes I’m soaring at 20,000 feet with it having interactive discussions with it, thinking about different ways of implementing solutions.
All I can say is, I hope that enough good people start getting with all this as soon as possible because it is truly transformative and has the potential to shape the world and also to lead to a Great Equalization and bring down these huge behemoths that don’t deserve to be where they are.
It’s time to kill Google, kill Facebook, kill Twitter, and kill all this other bullshit. It can be done now.
