Getting annoyed with Windows 8

Am getting close to reinstalling Windows 7 on my main laptop as I’m just getting tired of all these nagging issues with Windows 8. The Thinkpad driver for the trackpoint lost a critical feature which was to customize the middle-click button, which I always set to “do nothing” so that the middle-click can be used by other apps like the web browser where it is critical. Why would the feature just disappear from the Windows 8 driver?

Then there is the annoyance of the wireless connection settings being more primitive than with Windows 7. The Fn+F5 key sequence used to open the Thinkpad Mobility Center and enable one to turn various radios (bluetooth, wifi, etc.) on or off. That is gone.

Importing pictures from cameras was a pain but I did find a workaround which I detailed in another post. Still, when the camera is connected, Windows 8 switches to its “desktop” thing, it just imposes it right over everything else I’m doing on my desktop, all my other open apps. There’s no way to have it not do it and its just really annoying to have to Alt+Tab to get back to my other apps.

Windows 8 is definitely a big mistake for a company like Microsoft and really shows how messed up they are. A company with their experience should not make mistakes like this.

I’m tired of all the little annoyances. The interface is much uglier also. Things are less customizable. In all its a pain to use when upgrading to a more recent OS version should be something pleasing, not a grind. What the hell was Microsoft thinking?

Again, how I wish that Linux could replace Windows as the industry-standard desktop which all major hardware and software vendors agree mutually to support.

Linux needs to have a core system that can form the basis for all other flavors so that its easy for hardware and software vendors to develop stuff for it. On top of that core each distro should be free to design their own interface, tools, etc. So for instance the core system could be free of any particular package manager, and RedHat could make their rpm system run on top of it, as Debian could make dpkg run on top of it.
