Blaming assault and rape victims as troublemakers

A Swiss couple was on a bicycling tour through India and had camped for the night in a forest near a village. That night they were attacked and the female was raped.

A local police officer had the audacity to complain about the couple’s choosing to sleep in the forest, essentially blaming them for the attack and pissed of because of the ensuing negative publicity and extra work it must have caused the authorities in the town:

“They had veered off the main road after sunset into the jungle and set up a tent to rest during the night,” said Gurjar told the Washington Post. “Nobody goes into these jungles in the night. The cattle herders, wood collectors leave before dark. They were all alone and without help. They could have stayed in the village nearby or taken shelter at a school instead.”

Sick. Just totally sick. Blaming assault and rape victims as being troublemakers.
