Many if not most people who use the site Facebook have the mistaken understanding that as users of the site, the site exists primarily for them. In this context, they see themselves, the users, as similar to customers in the real world.
In the real world there is a relationship between a business and its customers. There are sayings like “The customer is always right” and “The customer always comes first” which indicate a kind of heirarchy that follows from the relation between a business and its clients, or customers.
Yet users of the site Facebook are hardly its clients nor its customers. The customers of Facebook are the advertisers. In the paradigm of Facebook, the users are the product. They are what is sold.
This paradigm is also the case for the governemnt of the United States. The citizens, the People, are not like clients nor customers who come first. The function of elected leaders is not to serve the People, but to serve their true clients, businesses. The people of the United States are the product which the government is responsible to manage for the sake of business.
