I’ve been repairing laptops over the past few months and I often notice they use tape to hold down components such as wires against the mainboard or to cover sensitive circuitboards attached to LCD panels. It is a type of black tape that has good adhesive qualities and the texture is somewhat like cloth – not at all like electrical tape which is more like plastic and leaves horrific residue behind (why do they even sell electrical tape?).
It turns out that this type of tape is called Gaffers Tape and is used by… you guessed it – gaffers who are people who deal with lighting in film production. Here is a list of uses from a FindTape.com listing for Gaffers Tape:
