Ceding territory

Imagine it’s 1950. America has just emerged from two major world wars. There is now peace. The country is expanding and building.

Imagine at this time if some politicians came along and said “We’re going to give 40% of the west coast of the United States to China. 40% of the territory of the United States along the west coast will become an extension of Guangzhou, China. It will belong to the Chinese.

Then they do the same thing with other areas: “We’re going to give 40% of the territory of the United States in the west and south to Mexico. 40% of the territory of the United States in the west and south will become and extension of Mexico. It will belong to Mexicans.

How is the above different than what we have today?

In 1950 the above would have been considered absolutely insane. Any attempt to enact such a betrayal, such a massive act of treason against the United States would have resulted in imprisonment if not execution on the part of the perpetrators.
