Heartbreaking

Macy’s to sell former I. Magnin building at Union Square

Macy’s is downsizing its physical presence in San Francisco once more.

The company will explore opportunities to sell the former I. Magnin building, approximately 240,000 square feet of retail space, from its flagship store in San Francisco’s Union Square. It will also convert the remaining street-level space into shops leased out to third-party sellers, the company said Monday.

This is heartbreaking. This store was (is) a jewel.

But do you know what’s more hearbreaking? Not being able to ride and lock your bicycle downtown because EVERY time you do thieves will attempt to steal components off of it.

Having to traverse streets adjacent to that area which are filthier than third world slums.

Walking around Union Square, which is the heart of San Francisco, and being exposed to a constant array of thieves, nutcases, drug addicts, etc.

Trying to ride a bicycle along streets with insane, irate motorists who will literally almost kill you just for bicycling legally in your lane but causing them to slow down.

That Macy’s store was always filled with international travelers, but the conditions in downtown San Francisco have been so absolutely abhorrent for so long that tourism is finally collapsing. And yes these deluded fuckers actually have the gall to blame the collapse at least partly on President Trump.

This heartbreak is not unique. This is the ongoing heartbreak story of the American city. A couple days ago my mother was telling me about the amazing Catholic girls’ high school she attended in what was once a great Midwestern city. And sadly that school and all the places of that city where her memories are from – have turned into dilapidated hell holes where whites no longer live.

There’s something wrong with this formula. This is not working. This is not how it’s supposed to be.
