Have been thinking about the situation with Greece recently. Read an article at scmp.com today discussing the likeliest scenario if Greece were to actually exit the Euro. Basically, it would be terrible and cause a lot of companies which probably are already on the margin of survival to collapse. That would not be helpful. Then, whatever new currency is created, it will undoubtedly collapse which will disproportionately affect more vulnerable members of society. I’m sure the Greek government and people know this.
While it may seem unpalatable to accept reforms which will have deep effects, I still think that Greece is far better off remaining in the Euro. First of all, the European Union is the most progressive governmental organization in the world politically, economically, socially, and ecologically. I’m sure there are other countries in the world which would die to be part of the Eurozone if they could. Just being in the Eurozone brings a lot of benefit to a country.
While from the perspective of many Greeks Germany may seem like bad guys, from an objective viewpoint Germany is one of the most progressive, advanced countries in the world, a model to follow. It far outshines most other countries in the world and has only a few peers. In short, Germany is extremely good company to be in. Its not like their government is filled with extremists or even right-wingers who come even remotely close to what goes for standard in countries in America and other places. By and large even the most conservative German politicians are quite liberal and also quite competent.
And if Greece accepts bailout terms from its creditors it will no doubt receive a lot of support in many ways. I’m sure a lot of people want to see Greece thrive and this crisis is an opportunity for Greece to fundamentally re-align itself along with a group of other nations most of which are outstanding.
Good luck Greece! I know you can make it!
