Thinkpad Trackpoint buttons are back

Lenovo’s decision to remove the Trackpoint buttons from the latest models of Thinkpad notebooks was widely and rather intensely disliked by people who have long used and loved Thinkpad notebooks. There was even a funny video overdub done of Hitler freaking out when he finds out that the Trackpoint buttons were removed. Most people were sickened by Lenovo’s attempt to imitate Apple’s design.

Now there is an online review of the latest Thinkpad X1 Carbon notebook on display at CES and the buttons have been restored.

There’s also an article about the new Thinkpad W550s which is going to be the best personal information appliance in the world.

Unfortunatley though Lenovo have not just done away altogether with the Trackpad.  People who don’t use Trackpoints should not use Thinkpads.  Also, while the Trackpoint buttons have been added back, the Touchpad itself is still one large, clickable button which depresses down when pushed.  That alone got bad reviews as the clicking of the Touchpad makes an extremely loud, annoying clacking sound.  It is a very poor design by Lenovo which has pissed many people off as they attempt to make a “cool” deisign to compete with Apple.  If I were to get one of these laptops I’d probably want to mod it by placing something underneath the Trackpad to physically prevent it from clicking.
