Microsoft probably made the tiles interface to make it easier for novice users to use devices. But a lot of more technologically-adept people have been very put off by it. The way Microsoft introduced it was to force it on users which upset a large base of users.
The tiles are also clearly designed for a tablet type device where input is made via touchscreen. With interfaces where a mouse is used, they are not a good idea.
AOL was trying to accomplish a similar objective with their interface: making it easy for novice users to be able to do things.
But in 2012 Microsoft should have been more adept at being able to provide a good system for novice users without ripping out the functionality that experienced users were accustomed to and forcing the novice design on them.
