Am leaning towards getting an Oreck XL (such as pictured above). Important features for me: 1) is small and portable (for my studio apt.); 2) has a shoulder strap; 3) has multiple extensions.

It looks like Makita did at one point, however their website no longer lists the model. It looks like the most popular design for compact vacuums these days has changed from when this post was written. Check out some of the ones from Makita: https://www.makitatools.com/cleaning/compactvacuums
