I’ve been eyeing getting a new compact camera since I have a cheapo phone (nice because I don’t care if it gets damaged or lost – let’s face it, a phone is a device that almost by definition gets a lot of wear and tear) and sometimes when I’m traveling I would like to be able to take a photo. For example, I’ve been in some fairly nice hotels before including the Fairmount and Ritz-Carlton, and on some top-levels of other high-rise ones. I love architecture and urban landscape views so its a shame not to be able to get a few pics during such adventures.
I noticed that some new cameras now have Wifi integrated and also advertise the ability to upload directly to social media and (hopefully other) sites. One such camera is the Canon S120. Canon offer a service called Canon Image Gateway which is necessary to register at and set up in order to get the upload feature to work.
I decided to just check into this in advance just to see how well it works and whether I could do something like get it to upload directly to my own WordPress sites (which would be awesome).
In order to be able to log in to Canon Image Gateway one must first set up a Canon account and then register a qualifying product which includes most Canon cameras made in the last few years. I was able to register and qualify with an older G11 I still have.
Now that I’m registered I’m curious to check this out and see what it can do. I’m also curious to see whether it is something that would be useful for a more novice user like my Mom.
It works! When you create an album in Canon Image Gateway under Album Details there is an icon for blog According to the help information:
You can upload images to the Online Photo Album directly from cameras / camcorders equipped with a Wi-Fi function.
You can clearly link an album to a blog as I have just done with a camera that does not have Wifi, as I’ve just done using a G11 and my web browser.
