I love the light in this scene

Kiyomori (of the Heiki clan) explains the idea of his dream capital at Fukuhara to the young Ushiwaka who later to becomes the warrior Yoshitsune who overthrows the Heiki.

Unfortunately the video is of very poor quality, probably having been copied from analog tv when the series (Taiga drama Yoshitsune) first aired.

I love scenes where there is bright luminiscence as here which evokes a bright dawn or sunset outside. What is interesting is that you can see, based on the reflection and shadows, that the light source must be off to the far left. Yet notice that its not highlighting the hair of the boy nor is it hitting the face of the man. So that makes me think that there must be some kind of block preventing it from hitting them but allowing it to fully hit the screen behind them.

Then again, there is a chance that this was actually shot at some amazing location – I’m sure there are many in Japan – early in the morning where this was the actual light. I almost hope it wasn’t however because its fun to think that someone had the artistry to create such light artificially.

Very beautiful. I want to start collecting snapshots of scenes with amazing lighting. How amazing it would be to have a large studio and budget to be able to create amazing lighting scenes like this at will!

Here’s another scene with subline lighting. You can almost see exactly where the light is placed just outside the set:

Yoritomo the Genji leader, his wife, and his father-in-law as chief advisor sit in discussion.
Yoritomo the Genji leader, one of his retainers, and his wife sit and discuss.

You can clearly see the way the back of the head of the character on the right is clearly lit, as well as the face of the woman on the left. The way her white lower garment luminesces with the light is a very beautiful effect. Is it just one light to the right side, or is there another light in the upper right foreground shining down as well?

Also, look at the way behind the candle on the screen is a concentrated area of luminescence as if from the glow of the candle. Is that being created by a spotlight? Perhaps that spotlight is the main and only source of light in this scene? But then it seems like the way the woman’s face is lit up that there must be at least one other light source…

I wonder too if there are issues with actors working under hot lights. What is it like to be on a set like this with a blazing hot, white light off to one side? Too bad the image is too grainy to notice if they are sweating or not. Then again they could be doused with mattifying powder…
