Most people who have broadband have a separate modem which connects to the boradband service via phone or cable line, and a wireless router which creates a home wireless network that various devices can connect to.
There are also modem/routers where everything is built into one. I like this idea. Its more simple.
Recently I’ve been experimenting with Annex M which is an ADSL standard which supports higher upload bandwidths. Because I use the coolest provider probably in America, sonic.net, all you have to do is dial 611 from your phone and it presents you with an automated menu where you can select the option.
But the modem also has to support it. The modem I have actually supports it although it does not do so automatically and there’s no way to select it via the administrative web interface. One has to telnet into the modem/router and enable it manually via the command line. It must be re-enabled manually after a power reset.
That’s not a big problem, but now I’m looking at options for a better modem/router and found this one:
Based on what I’ve read, this is perhaps the coolest modem/router that can be purchased. The company Billion is Australian and it appears that these units are not even on the market in America. Still anyone who’s an übergeek would probably want to get their hands on one.
