Watching a fascinating documentary about the Greek Euro Crisis presented from the interesting viewpoint of a British Euro-skeptic former member of Parliament. In this scene he’s interviewing a German MP standing somewhere in Frankfurt and there is this extraordinary building in the background.
I’m glad I watched this video because it seems the only exposure Americans normally get to the Euro crisis is the BS presented through the mainstream media. In this documentary the presenter actually goes to Greece and speaks with people. Contrary to what people believe, it seems that most Greek citizens, despite the overwhelming austerity and damage to the economy, still prefer the Euro currency.
But the presenter argues that the Euro was not at all suitable for Greece and one notable interviewee in agreement with him is the chief economist of Commerzbank.
When you see a documentary like this – and many of the other excellent British documentaries I’ve seen recently – one realizes how absolutely banal and quite atrocious American mainstream media is.
Even though this documentary is presented by a Euro-skeptic, after the interviews with so many people deeply affected by the crisis who want to see the Euro (and Greece) succeed, one cannot help feeling deeply moved.
At one point near the end of the documentary the presenter is sitting at an outdoor cafe in Athens speaking with three hardcore thinkers from Greek society and they are discussing the future of democracy and the European Union. Given that this is Greece, the place where democracy began in 508 B.C., the context is extraordinary.
I sincerely hope for the sake of the people of Europe that this crisis will soon be passed.
