This is a trip

It sounds so futuristic and the video does its part in giving the impression, but a lot of this is just little sensors connected to networks from little components that anyone can now buy although they probably have a little ways to go before being more mainstream on places like eBay.

This is similar to the trippy things that some of the new LED lights can do. You can have LED lights in sockets in a room where the color temperature can be wireless controlled with a remote.

I found this particular video because I’m searching for a little temperature sensor that I can use as a test device for polling data.

I’ve had a couple jobs where I was paid to set up monitoring systems which poll data. One setup was for credit card transactions, another for backend servers, and the other was hundred-thousand-dollar internet routers which routed traffic for an entire city.

Now people can put sensors all over their homes and find out what the most optimal setting is for say a room vent to keep temperature as constant as possible and minimize energy usage.

I would also very much like to be able to monitor ambient noise in my neighborhood. One day I’d like to walk into city hall with graphs in hand and say “Look at how fucked this is!” regarding the unnecessary noise on my street.

When I see the above video I think “What would Buddha think?” but then I tell myself its only little electronic sensors which you can probably get cheap from some Taiwanese company.
