A couple years ago I got a queen-size futon. A considerable part of my decision to get it was because cotton is a natural and highly-recyclable material. But even though it is a highly-recyclable material because cotton contain high-grade cellolose fibers which make excellent paper products, I cannot find anywhere that actually does recycle it.
In this day and age, and given the extensive propaganda of cities and waste companies, this is unbelievable. I’ve now called two of the main waste companies in my area and both of them are willing to take the futon – for a fee mind you – and then dump it in a landfill. When I press them about how to recycle it they evade my questions. It sounds like they don’t even know what it means to recycle because some of the answers they give are 1) just dump it in a landfill (that is not recycling); or 2) give it to an agency like St. Vincent de Paul which sells used furniture. That is re-use but I did not ask about donating a futon.
I realize now that I was just a stupid idiot for thinking that I was doing something beneficial for the environment by making a sacrifice to get a futon instead of a nice, cushy mattress and boxspring made from synthetic materials.
The amount of waste being generated in America is appallingly vast and totally inexcusable. Even while there’s so much hype and propaganda from waste disposal companies, politicians, and governments, the actual situaiton is appalling.
One thing I’ve found out is if you actually care about the environment and want things recycled don’t rely on the monopoly waste removal company Recology because they are deceiving and don’t believe any of the propaganda of city governments which also are deceiving.
If I had someone to go film with me and we went out to the main landfill for my city I am willing to bet that 90% of the items we would find there are recyclables that have just been dumped, probably mixed with copious amounts of toxic waste which should have been processed separately and wasn’t.
