Windows 8 issues fixed with new “8.1” update

People who might have been loathe to upgrade to Windows 8 because of much of the bad publicity it had received might now consider upgrading since Microsoft has released the 8.1 update.

There are two main things that have been corrected by this update:

1.  Windows 8.1 will now boot directly to the desktop, similar to the way it has on all previous versions of Windows (except Windows 8).  To enable this to occur, right-click on the Start button or go to Control Panel -> Taskbar and Navigation and select the Navigation tab.  Check the option for “Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in”

2.  Windows 8.1 includes a Start button similar to all previous versions of Windows (except Windows 8).

Unfortunately Microsoft has not done away with the hideous whole-screen slate panels that popup for some tasks.  Its as if Windows had evolved over all this time to a state of elegance and finesse in terms of Window ergonomics and aesthetics and suddenly users are dumped in Romper Room scrawling-crayon-land.

I thought the whole point of Windows since, like, version 3.1 was, well, windows?
