One more interesting thing about Yemen

I’ve written about Yemen before. The legendary Sheba was in what is now Yemen. There is a 3,000 year old temple of the Moon God there. And today I read this:

The earliest evidence of coffee drinking comes from 15th-century Yemen.

This came up because there was just a study released about health benefits of Greek coffee.

One other fact about coffee which I read which made me do more research was:

The Dutch East India Company was the first to import coffee on a large scale.

It turns out that the Dutch East India Company was the first MNC or multi-national corporation, with all the ensuing destructive, oppressive, and homicidal practices as other MNCs.

It was also associated with the first speculative bubble, called “Tulip-mania”, which occurred in the 1630’s and had to do with, of all things, tulips.

It would be interesting to make a drama about some mid-level Dutch merchant in the 1630’s. Perhaps the main character could be some good-hearted, honest merchant who sees the corruption and treachery of his time in his dealings with others.

I also just watched a YouTube clip of a documentary about spices and am totally jealous that these filmmakers got to make this because I wanted to make something similar:
