List of Essential Extensions for Google Chrome Browser

This is a list of the most important and useful extensions (plugins, addons) for the Google Chrome web browser:

Name Description
Proxy SwitchySharp Manage and switch between multiple proxies quickly & easily.

This plugin works with Privoxy, a must-have ad-blocking proxy. It makes configuring, and switching on and off of Privoxy easy.

Do Not Track Plus Stop secret tracking of your web browsing

THE must-have addon for privacy protection!

LastPass LastPass is a free password manager and form filler. LastPass is also available for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari.

It is difficult to imagine not having LastPass, so useful is it.

Tab Position Customizer Customize tab opening position and closing behavior.Allows one to change the default position of a new tab.

I prefer new tabs to be next to currently open tab, not on the far right. I also prefer that when closing a tab the last activated tab is opened.

Speed Dial 2 Speed dial 2 is fast and clean extension for your favorite pages and quick access to your apps, bookmarks and browsing history.

Is still inferior to speed dial features for Opera and Firefox, but seems to be the best available for Chrome so far.

Undo Recently Closed Tabs Find, search and restore closed tabs even after restarting Chrome

Nice to be able to undo a closed tab in case one is closed by accident, something that unfortunately can easily happen with Chrome.

DictionaryTip Lookup definitions in a small frame without leaving the webpage

The Firefox version of this extension is extremely cool.  One can simply double-click on any word in a page and a sub-window with dictionary lookup from any of several dictionaries/translators will popup.

Facebook Disconnect Stop Facebook from tracking the webpages you go to.

FB are so (insert negative adjectives here) that, even though I’m not registered on their site, I’m still concerned that they track me. Do Not Track Plus (above) is supposed to block FB, but I like the idea of having an extra layer of defense against them.

SERP Click Tracking Disabler Plus for Google This extension disables Google’s click tracking for search results.

This fixes a major problem with Google search results where the actual URL’s of returned results are redirects through google.com because of their click tracking.  It restores the URL’s of search results to what they should be.

YouTube Downloader: MP3 / HD Video Download Download any video from YouTube as an MP3 or an HD Video. Adds a download button to YouTube video pages.

Very nice to be able to download videos.

AutoZoom Saves the zoom level for every page and offers optional text zoom.

This fixes a defect in the way Chrome’s zoom feature only zooms the currently open page for a site, instead of applying the zoom level to the entire site.

Stop AutoRefresh Stop pages’ auto refresh with http-equiv + refresh meta tags

Its so annoying when reading a page and suddenly it disappears and reloads before your very eyes because of auto refresh. This disables it for pages.

Google Voice (by Google) Make calls, send SMS, preview Inbox, and get notified of new messages. (US only)

When I started using Google Voice I realized the extent to which the cellular industry is scamming us all. GV is what modern communications would begin to look like if it weren’t for an industry that is entrenched in ripping off the American public and has full support of the government.

To wit: with Google Voice and an app called GrooVe IP on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE (yes, the original, Apple-infringing version which is still the best [and lightest] tablet available on the market). I can make and receive unlimited voice calls with superior audio quality for free over either WiFi or my 2GB/month data plan (which only costs $30/month). That’s right, unlimited calls to and from my tablet with a plan that costs only $30/month (ok it actually comes out to 1,667 minutes if I were to use the full 2GB for calls).

Not only that, with GV I get to route calls to any phone or computer I have, including multiple at the same time (its amazing and kind of surreal to have an incoming call ring my mobile phone, home phone, tablet, and computer all at the same time).

Now check this out – if I shell out the bucks and buy a device that is smaller, such as a Samsung Galaxy Note which is classified as a phone, I am forced to pay for a standard, expensive, and limited per-minute “voice” plan and must be forced to get a data plan on top of that. People should be outraged about how cellular companies are basically forcing us to get ripoff “voice” plans which in the end are only a different form of transmission of data packets using the same exact technology backbone and infrastructure.
