This year at exactly 23:56:60 on December 31 UTC there will be one extra second added. It will therefore be at 18:59:60 EST or 15:59:60 PST. What better way to celebrate the extra second than by watching the date change in a Linux console?
Here is a command to display the UTC as it counts down:
watch -p -n 1 date -u
